Agentic AI Is Working. CSPs Need to Control What It Does Next.

An article by Ribbon Communications.

Agentic AI is proving its value and ROI in enterprise software. Leading CRM and ITSM platforms incorporate agents that interact with customers, retrieve account context, find answers, and resolve routine service tasks. The gains in speed and productivity are real.

For communications service providers (CSPs), the opportunity is bigger, and the operating environment is much more complex. A customer experience problem can span the home, access network, transport, cloud, and service layer. The evidence sits across multiple vendors and systems, often as a mix of real-time network telemetry as well as customer- and/or domain-specific logs, metrics, and records. AI agents designed to perform with one operational system may have only a narrow view of what is happening across the end-to-end network.

That is why CSP executives choosing AI solutions and vendors need to look beyond the agent demo. The decisive question is who controls the data, workflows, and decisions that will drive autonomous operations.

The legacy OSS approach has a ceiling

Traditional OSS vendors, as would be expected, are introducing agentic solutions designed to make their existing tools and products easier to use. Specific agents might be designed to simplify planning within the vendor’s inventory platform or to improve a fulfillment process managed by a service orchestrator. These are useful advances. A faster planning task or fewer manual fulfillment steps can produce measurable value.

But each agent is typically built around the processes and data held inside that vendor’s OSS portfolio. When the CSP needs to connect insights across domains, adapt a workflow, or bring in operational data from another source, the answer will likely be another expensive integration project or round of vendor customization.

The result can be a more intelligent interface with the same constraints. Critical processes remain dependent on legacy platforms, and CSPs remain dependent on the vendor’s tools and services to change them. A collection of agents that improves individual OSS tasks does not, by itself, create an operation that can detect a developing service issue, understand its cross-domain impact, act in real time, and confirm that service has recovered.

OSS tools are critical and CSPs do not need to discard their existing investments. They do need an AI and automation strategy that can work across them.

Modernization starts with a live view of the network

Autonomous operations depend on the quality and timeliness of the information behind every decision. If an agent sees only a subset of alarms or relies on stale inventory data, it may produce a plausible recommendation without understanding the customer impact or the real cause.

An AI-native platform starts by bringing any and all relevant operational data together. It ingests and correlates telemetry, events, logs, service information, and other data from operational systems and network devices across vendors and domains. Analytics turns those signals into a current picture of network and service health. Agents and automated workflows can then work from shared context rather than isolated views inside separate tools.

This foundation changes what automation workflows can achieve. Instead of reacting to an alarm in one domain, a CSP can connect it to a recent change, identify affected services, investigate likely causes, and coordinate an automated response. It is a practical basis for moving from faster troubleshooting to proactive assurance and, ultimately, closed-loop operations.

Ribbon’s Acumen™ AIOps and Automation Platform was designed to accelerate this progression. Acumen Analytics, the foundation of the platform, provides real-time, cross-domain observability and scalable analytics for multi-vendor environments. Acumen Builder adds a low-code development environment on top of that foundation for creating agents and automation workflows. Together, they connect the ability to observe what is happening with the ability to decide and act.

Give operators room to build, and to change course

The other test of an AIOps and automation platform is how much freedom it gives the CSP after deployment. Operational priorities change. Networks evolve. A workflow that works for one market, line of business, operating company, or service may need to change for another.

With Acumen, CSPs can build their own agents and workflows, or customize and deploy Ribbon’s prebuilt agents for key operational tasks such as NOC automation and change management. Internal IT and NetOps teams can also integrate with third-party operational systems, as well as with the AI platform or LLM of their choice using open standards and APIs. The aim is to let operators use their existing tools while taking greater control of how data and action flow between them.

That flexibility supports a disciplined path to autonomy. Begin with a high-impact use case, such as fault management or root cause analysis. Give internal teams cross-domain visibility and AI-assisted recommendations. Automate repeatable steps with a human on-the-loop approving important actions. Then expand to supervised orchestration agents and closed-loop workflows as the CSP gains evidence that they perform reliably.

Each phase should be judged by operational outcomes: faster resolution, fewer handoffs, lower OPEX, and better customer experience. Autonomy is a capability to earn and expand, not a switch to flip.

Our customer Optimum Communications (add link to FutureNet article) demonstrates what this approach can deliver. By improving end-to-end visibility, from the core network to the CPE, and automating fault management with AI-driven insights, Optimum has strengthened coordination across their operations teams, reduced resolution time, and improved service assurance. Its experience shows how tackling a specific operational challenge can deliver substantial OPEX savings while building a foundation for more autonomous operations.

The choice facing CSP leaders is straightforward: buy agentic solutions designed to make individual OSS tools and legacy processes more efficient, or invest in an open, AI-native platform that lets the operator connect data, intelligence, and action across the network.
