As-a-Service Mindset: Driving Telco to Techco Shift
An article by Anupama Mahabhashyam, Product Leader and Senthil Kumar, CTO, Telco EMEA at Broadcom.
The telecommunications industry is undergoing a paradigm shift, transitioning from traditional Telco models to Techco models. This transformation moves beyond basic connectivity services to end-to-end technology solutions, driven by rapid technological advancements and evolving market dynamics.
Techcos prioritize customer experience, operating with agility and continuously innovating through cloud-based, AI-driven, and disaggregated networks. Their open, multi-vendor ecosystems foster continuous innovation, enabling rapid feature releases and business model pivots within days rather than months.
In contrast, traditional Telcos operate with siloed IT and network teams, often following rigid, lengthy verification processes. High capital expenditures (CapEx) and operational expenses (OpEx) tied to maintaining physical infrastructure (example Data center, networks, switches, towers, and radio antennas) limit their ability to innovate and increase revenue. Despite substantial network expenditures particularly on 5G, new revenue growth remains elusive.
Techcos are not just service providers; they are ecosystem builders. They create interconnected platforms that enhance digital experiences and integrate seamlessly into everyday lives. Recognizing the need for collaboration, Telcos are increasingly forming strategic partnerships with tech firms, startups, and even competitors to co-create value. By leveraging third party innovations and open APIs, Techcos unleash new revenue opportunities while maintaining control over performance and security. This approach empowers operators to gain more control over their service offerings breaking free from vendor constraints.
Operational and Cultural Transformation
- Talent and Culture: Transitioning to a Techco model requires upskilling the workforce and fostering a culture of innovation. Attracting andretaining top tech talent is essential for sustaining transformation efforts.
- Operational Agility: Embracing agile methodologies, rapid prototyping, and a fail-fast approach enables rapid adaptation to market changes, improving – responsiveness – to evolving customer needs.
- Data Security: Ensuring robust cybersecurity safeguards networks and customer information with enhanced technological capabilities.
Architectural Evolution
The Techco model emphasizes a shift from rigid, closed, and complex systems to flexible, open, and cost-effective architectures. This transformation involves moving from maintaining legacy systems and managing heavy integration to adopting a unified network and IT platform with a modular, digital-first approach.
VMware Telco Cloud Platform embraces an open horizontal platform that enables communication service providers (CSPs) to accelerate innovation, reduce operational costs, and unlock new revenue streams. By automating network and infrastructure operations, shortens time-to-market for 5G services and enterprise offerings helping CSPs respond quickly to shifting customer demands and market dynamics.
Operational complexity is significantly reduced, allowing skilled teams to focus on strategic initiatives instead of manual, repetitive tasks. This shift enhances productivity and lowers the
total cost of ownership (TCO), delivering stronger return on investment (ROI) over time.
Automation first approach ensures faster service delivery, consistent quality, and higher availability. Automated, policy-driven operations support reliable rollout of services across distributed environments. It also enables efficient resource utilization across deployments supporting service differentiation on shared infrastructure. Due to this ability, CSPs can offer tailored solutions for enterprises, private networks, and vertical industries without needing parallel architectures minimizing CapEx.
Monetizing Network Investments
One of the biggest challenges for mobile operators is monetizing their substantial network investments, especially with the advent of 5G technology. Network APIs present a promising solution by offering real-time connectivity insights to enhance customer experience and optimize resource utilization.
By developing a robust API ecosystem and opening network capabilities to application
developers, operators can better support their network investments and drive new revenue
streams.
AI as a Strategic Priority
AI is becoming a strategic priority for telecom operators, driving operational efficiency and enhanced customer experiences. More than half of telecom leaders actively sponsor AI initiatives, with both core AI and generative AI (GenAI) being deployed across business areas. Core AI is enhancing operational efficiency, while a significant percentage of operators are already implementing GenAI widely.
In addition, successful AI adoption requires skilled workforce and a data-driven culture along with responsible and ethical AI implementation. While improving financial outcomes and cost efficiency is a major goal, operators also aim to enhance decision-making, customer experience, and sustainability. However, there is no clear, unified framework for measuring AI’s return on investment (ROI), suggesting that a new approach to evaluating AI’s impact may be needed.
Broadcom bridges this gap enabling Telcos to evolve into Sovereign Cloud providers, offering secure, local, and scalable solutions with VMware Private AI. By embracing AI- driven automation and control, operators can lead the way in delivering trusted, sovereign cloud services that meet the demands of a data-driven world.
Telcos offering connectivity and modern private cloud solutions can seamlessly blend AI-driven services with existing digital infrastructure. This capability creates opportunities for new revenue streams through Sovereign AI-powered products and services, including adjacent sovereign opportunities like AI as a Service.
In essence, the journey from Telco to Techco is about more than technological upgrades—it requires a holistic transformation of business models, operational practices, and customer engagement strategies to thrive in today’s dynamic digital marketplace.
